How to Have a Happy Betta Fish

How to Have a Happy Betta Fish

1.Make sure your betta has a good home.
Bettas need a minimum of 2.5 gallons, a heater, and a low current filter to be happy. They are also happiest when they haveclean water, so be sure to do a 25% water change every week for 5 - 10 gallons, twice a week for tanks 2.5 gallons.

2.Teach him to jump out at the water at your finger by wiggling your finger above the surface of the water.

You can even stick a food pellet on the tip of your finger to motivate him, but only if it's meal time. Be careful not to let him jump out of the tank.Betta fish are curious fish, and they like to play! Move your finger around on the glass of his tank, and he might follow you around.

3.Move around his decorations or buy him a new one.

Bettas love exploring, so caves and tunnels are good choices for decorations.

4.Contrary to some popular belief, Betta fish do NOT live long in small puddles or filthy environments.

They reside in large rice paddies and slow moving streams. In the case of most Betta the bigger the aquarium the better.

5.
Bring in some "company" to pal with the Betta fish.

Betta fish like company when your not home. Buy him an apple snail, zebra diano, or cory cat to keep him company. Make sure to avoid colorful, aggressive and fish with long fins such as guppies or other bettas so the Betta doesn't try to attack them.

  1. I've been a betta owner for years now, currently on # 5 and 6 and they all have been very happy. I've managed to keep the water temperature just over 70 degrees without a heater, and in 1 gallon tanks with a once a week 3/4 water change. The first 4 lived 3 1/2 to 4 years which I read is their normal life expectancy, and the 2 I have only had less than a month but seem really happy already. They have all loved following my finger around the outside of the tank, but what they all love the most because they use them so much, and would suggest to those betta owners that don't have one yet are the betta hammocks. They sell for like $3 to $4 at most pet stores.

  2. Bettas don't need a friend. These things are called 'fighting fish' for a reason. Some bettas will not mind a tank mate but some will be very aggressive to any living thing in their tank. Please do NOT get a tank mate unless you have lots of hiding places in a roomy tank or have a friend/spare tank to rehome whatever tank mate your betta rejects.

    1. How mean. They're not just "fighting fish". Its like saying bulldogs are "fighting dogs". Animals by nature are territorial, which includes us, and we'll fight for homes we'd like to keep. Bettas as territorial fish may attack other fishes but it doesnt mean all of them. I've had several bettas find company in several other species, never attacked them so long as they had room. They're also pretty tolerant of bettas in other tanks after a while. Idiots who think it is fun to pit these fishes against each other should be put in a coliseum to see how it feels. How you treat your fishes, dogs, cats, animals in totality, determines how they will treat you and other animals.

  3. Yes I also have a betta in a one gallon and he is super happy. I have a thermometer and I make sure the water doesn't get too cold or too hot, but no heater is required.
Also I could have sworn I read somewhere that bettas will attack snails.
